Connecting the Timer & Scanner
Getting the timing hardware and bib scanner talking to Timing.
Connecting the timer
Most timing consoles connect over USB and show up to Windows as a serial (COM) port. To connect one in Timing:
- Plug in the timer and let Windows finish installing its driver first.
- In Timing, open the Timer › Open menu item.
- If more than one COM port is available, a Select COM Port dialog appears — choose the port for your timer. With only one port available, Timing connects to it automatically.
Once connected, the “No Timer” label on the main window is replaced with a live running clock. Use Timer › Close to disconnect it (for example, to free the port for another program).
Timer format
Timing understands a few different timing console protocols, set in Preferences under Timer Format:

| GoMango | 115200 baud, for GoMango-brand timing hardware. |
| FarmTek | 1200 baud, for FarmTek timing hardware. |
Pick the format that matches your hardware before opening the timer — it determines the connection speed Timing uses.
Swap Start/Finish
If the start and finish timing heads are wired backwards (start events are being read as finish events or vice versa), use Timer › Swap Start/Finish instead of re-wiring anything at the course.
Connecting the barcode/QR scanner
A USB bib scanner lets a worker at grid scan a driver's printed bib to stage them instead of typing their number.
- Plug in the USB scanner.
- In Timing, open Scanner › Setup USB.
- When prompted, scan any barcode to confirm the scanner is recognized, then select OK.
Once set up, scanning a driver's bib stages them automatically, with a distinct success or failure sound so the scanning worker doesn't need to watch the screen. A failed scan (unknown code, or a driver who's already staged/on course) plays the failure sound instead. If the scanner starts behaving oddly, Scanner › Reset re-initializes it without restarting Timing.
