Troubleshooting

Common problems and what to check first.

LiveTiming or Announcer can't find Timing

Both apps show “Unable to find a running Timing application” along with this computer's network address(es) when they can't locate Timing. Work through these in order:

  • Is Timing actually running? It has to be open (past the Select Event step) before LiveTiming or Announcer can find it.
  • Same network? All three computers need to be on the same local network. Two computers on the venue's guest Wi-Fi (which often isolates devices from each other) or on different networks entirely won't be able to see each other.
  • No network connection at all? If the dialog reports “This computer doesn't seem to have a network connection,” connect to Wi-Fi/Ethernet first.
  • Firewall blocking it? The Timing computer needs its one-time firewall setup to have completed — see Install & Network Setup.
  • Select OK to keep retrying once you've fixed the network, or Cancel to close the app and try again later.

“No Timer” never changes to a running clock

  • Confirm the timer is plugged in and Windows has finished installing its driver (check Device Manager for a COM port).
  • Use Timer › Open — if nothing happens, no COM port was detected.
  • Double-check the Timer Format in Preferences matches your actual hardware; a mismatched format connects at the wrong speed and won't read valid data.

Scanner isn't staging cars

  • Re-run Scanner › Setup USB and scan a test barcode when prompted.
  • Try Scanner › Reset if it was working earlier in the day and stopped.
  • A failure tone on a valid-looking scan usually means that driver is already staged or on course — check the run list before re-scanning.

Can't remove an entry from the run list

Timing blocks removing an entry that's currently on course, or one that already has a time recorded — this is intentional, to prevent losing results by accident. See Running an Event for the right way to correct a run instead.

“This registration appears invalid”

Re-open Help › Register… in Timing and activate again — see Registration & Licensing.

Timing won't finish setting up on first launch

If you see “Please run again as an administrator to get things ready,” close Timing and relaunch it with Run as administrator so it can finish its one-time firewall/database configuration — see Install & Network Setup.

Results on the website look wrong or out of date

On the computer running LiveTiming, select Reset to re-send the full current state of the event to the website.
